Dad. The three letter word that means the world—aside from mom—to us. When I was growing up, my dad would play all the games with me – namely the original Nintendo – and he would play with me pretty frequently. We didn’t have a PC then, so the NES was my gateway into another dimension. But I didn’t go through it alone. He was there.
Some of the games that bonded us at the time were Donkey Kong, Dragon Warrior, and Contra. Contra especially, bonded us. But it was Contra too, that caused my dad never to play games with me ever again. Why? Nerd rage basically. I kept getting upset that he would die frequently, and once I raged at him, he game-quit and since then, has never played with me again.
I’m now in my 30’s, and I suppose, I should ask him to play with me again. I realized all these years I never came and told him that I’d love for him to play again with me. And now that I have lots of gaming PCs at my disposal, it’s never too late.
